What’s the Difference Between a Hatchback and Sedan?

An Overview of the Difference Between a Hatchback and Sedan

When looking for your next vehicle, you may be torn between the hatchback and the sedan model of a vehicle. But what exactly is the difference between the two? The difference between hatchback models and sedans lies in four key areas: overall size, fuel economy and price, vision, and storage privacy. Check out the differences in each model below, courtesy of Matador Motors.

Vehicle Size

Hatchback models provide more cargo space due to their heightened rear body style, which supports a flip-up rear hatch door – hence the name. The raised ceiling in the body style also allows for more passenger headspace, but they typically don’t provide large amounts of added passenger space. Sedan models are much closer to coupes than crossovers, as they have a trunk with less space.

Fuel Economy and Price

Another factor that sets models apart can be in the overall price and estimated fuel economy. Due to the larger back-end, hatchback models tend to be slightly heavier and more expensive. This can mean paying thousands more for the added space and ease of use. Its added size can also equate to a lower fuel economy, where sedans are one of the most efficient vehicles you can purchase or lease. Though some hatchback models remain close to the sedan’s gas mileage, it may save you more at the pump in the long road by purchasing or leasing a sedan.

Vision and Storage Privacy

Even in vision and storage privacy, sedans and hatchbacks differ. As another bonus to hatchback models, the taller frames allow for larger rear windows. This means your vision to the rear and blind spots are improved compared to a sedan. However, sedans offer more privacy for cargo. As mentioned above, the Hatchback does offer more cargo space, but its larger rear windows don’t allow for the same privacy as a sedan trunk does. You can mitigate this with a privacy screen or cover, but it may hinder the added vision a hatchback receives.
