What’s the Difference Between All-Wheel Drive and Front-Wheel Drive?

Pros and Cons Between A Vehicle with All-Wheel Drive or Front-Wheel Drive

During a car search, you may hesitate when it comes to what drivetrain you want. Many common vehicles will offer either the standard front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) capabilities. What’s the difference between the two? At Matador Motors, we provide the benefits and differences between each option.

Front-Wheel Drive Vehicles Weigh less, offer More Fuel Economy

As the most common drivetrain available, front-wheel drive models provide a variety of benefits. These models are much easier to produce, as it offers the basic drivetrain and are more affordable in the end. Most commonly found in sedans and crossovers, front-wheel drive vehicles often provide more fuel economy than all-wheel drive options. This ultimately saves you at the pump and overall time you can spend on the road. In some cases, vehicles can provide more interior space without an AWD or 4WD option as well.

All-Wheel Drive Vehicles Provide Better Torque Distribution For Traction

While front-wheel drive is the most common type, the all-wheel drive hype has come a long way in the past few decades. Crossovers and SUVs often offer all-wheel drive capabilities, though more recent sedans may offer it as well, such as the Toyota Camry and Mazda3, amongst others. While heavier than front-wheel drive models, the main draw of AWD comes in its even torque distribution. The configuration allows each wheel to receive an even amount of torque, which boosts traction and control while driving. This is especially good for off-road trails or slippery/rough driving conditions on-road.
